Hello everyone!
I hope that all is well. Welcome to my new newsletter, Your Lawyer on the System.
My name is Ryan Knutson. I am a California-barred attorney, writer, and public policy educator and advocate. I have my own legal practice, focusing in civil rights, constitutional law, general civil litigation, and conservatorships/probate and mental health related law.
For the past decade or so, I have worked for international judges, District Attorney's Offices, Congressional Offices, civil rights law firms, and large law offices litigating and counseling clients in important, sensitive, high-value cases with broad impact. I have had the chance to learn the system as an attorney and advocate, to work inside the system as an advocate, and to see it from many perspectives, defense and prosecution, plaintiff and defendant. I know our legal system and systems of government well.
I believe that the public has a right to know how its government institutions, legal system, and the law works, and when it falls short. Too often, the media, and social media pundits in particular, present deliberately false or misleading information, propaganda purporting to be fact, or recklessly untrue reporting to the public. Others attempt to shut down any conversation that deviates from the accepted mainstream dogma of the day, and to punish those who dare to reason critically. We live in perilous times, made more dangerous by those with agendas bent on distorting reality to suit their purposes. There simply are very few good sources of information and analysis on what is actually going on nationally and globally in the systems of law and government that affect us all.
In this publication, I hope to use my background and experiences to help educate on what the issues are in our systems of law and government and how they affect all of us. I also hope to find a community of people curious to read and engage with creative content discussing the system and our shared futures. In short, this newsletter’s purpose is to share my own analysis and explanation of legal topics and national and international events in a way that counteracts the rampant misinformation circulating everywhere about the law and our government. The public deserves good information and discussion from which, in a democracy, we must make our decisions for ourselves. For most importantly, a democracy does not survive without the participation of informed citizens willing to make decisions in the best interests of all.
I plan on posting articles with analysis of legal and systems-related topics relating to national and international events at least once a month, on the second Sunday of every month. These articles will be free, with some limited paid content. However, if you can sign up for a paid subscription at some level, it is always appreciated!
To those of you who received my previous email newsletter, welcome as well! I have now permanently migrated this newsletter to Substack. After some years of absence from writing analysis of legal-related topics in national and international events, I am renewing my commitment to talk about these important issues.
